Incident at Montebello by P.A. Moed is a facinating look at pre-war facist Italy under the rule of Musselini. The setting is a small town in the south and the plot centers on a true story involving Benito Musselini, Cornelious Vanderbuilt and the hit and run murder of a small child by the car they were driving. There's intrigue, politics and romance...something for everyone. The characters are well conceived, and come to life in a way that makes you laugh, cry, cheer and boo but most of all get to the end of the book to find out what happens. I dont usually stay up late into the night for a good book, but I couldn't put it down. Truly a great read!
The Incident at Montebello is a first novel but by P. A. Moed, but it does not read like it at all. It was a book club pick mostly because she is a local writer and we wanted to support her. However,"Incident" is clever, suspenseful, great characters, and a definite page turner. Based on a true story, Moed has researched and written meticulously. Several of the women in my book club could not put this book down, including me. It was one of those books that you hold at the end and wish for more (she is writing her next book). In my circle, both men and women read this book and all loved it.
This book is a masterpiece of a time in history that will captivate you from the beginning to the end. Even though it is fictional, based on a true event, the characters were so real. It was a difficult book to set down. I had to know what was to happen next, very action packed. The culture of Italy at that time is depicted well.

I love everything about this novel, from the setting, to the subject, to the characters, and the style of writing- I even learned some Italian along the way!

I'd like to see a movie produced from this novel. Let the truth be known! How about a sequel? I want to know what becomes of Lucia and Sardolini , Isolina, too in their life in America! Guess I'll dream! )
"The Incident at Montebello" is well written with an excellent cast of characters. I'm normally an action junkie, but this historic docu-drama held my interest all the way to the end. For those of you who are reading "The Great Gatsby", this is a look at the other side of society just a few years in the future. The conflict and tragedy is much more real in Montebello. As a bonus, the author provides us with interesting piece of history.
Hard to put down because of the plot twists and turns and the ever-present danger. Has a soap opera quality in that regard (albeit a scary and violent one). Reminiscent of John Grisham, whom I consider an excellent plot craftsman. That said, as with Grisham, don't expect literature. Transitions are pedestrian and the writing, well, pedestrian. It gets three stars for conveying a real sense of the time and the culture of rural Italy during Mussolini's dictatorship.
Ms. Moed has created believable characters, both likable and detestable, and a nicely structured plot that deftly integrates historical fact and fiction.

Moed seemed at her best revealing character through dialogue, although there were also many instances of convincing exposition and internal dialogue.

The characters I cared most about were Sardolini, and, to a slightly lesser extent, Lucia. This may be because Sardolini often acted, whereas Lucia generally reacted.

Many of Donato's scenes, especially toward the end, as his wavering character is pushed into deciding between loyalties, were very compelling. They created the sort of tension and suspense that makes you read ahead to get to the outcome--an effect not easily pulled off.

Several minor characters also stood out as a result of Moed's precise choice of of sometimes very brief detail, particularly Marie Elena.

Some scenes set outside of Montebello felt as though they were inserted to fill out the plot rather than having been organically grown from within it. On the other hand, had they been thoroughly fleshed out, the book would have become unmanageable. An acceptable compromise, I think.

Well worth $4.99. I'd have payed twice that.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It's a very well-written novel based on what is now a little-remembered piece of history, and it brings its era and setting to life; Moed uses her travel-writing background well, adding the small observations and grace notes that set the reader convincingly in Fascist Italy between wars, observing characters that one can care about as they try to carry on their lives in the shadow of personal disaster and political upheaval. It's an excellent--and, unlike many books, physically polished--first novel by a writer with heart; I look forward to the next.
