The Comedy of Errors Wordsworth Classics William Shakespeare Books

I imagine it's not easy to render the humor of farce into a graphic novel, especially when the text is 400 year old iambic pentameter. Graphic Shakespeare was not up to the challenge. This book is fine for introducing younger readers to the plot of Comedy of Errors. The plot, though, isn't interesting for its own sake- it requires a director and cast to flesh it out with stage business. There are plenty graphic novels of Shakespeare's plays now that show the illustrator making the same choices as a director and cast would. This book does not, and is of limited use.

The Comedy of Errors Wordsworth Classics William Shakespeare Books Reviews

This book is golden! The cut of the play gives the feel of the entire work and all of the suggestions on staging and props are right on for a middle-high school production of the play. I can't wait to do another play from the series next year.
MUST LIKE SHAKESPEARE.

I had to purchase and read this for an assignment. Good thing it was only two bucks!
Couldn't get through the entire thing. Maybe I need to take a Shakespeare class to appreciate his writing.
Just the thing. Shakespeare on a budget - what more can I say?
It came and it was great! It is perfect for going over lines or just to read some Shakespeare!
Includes a wonderful introduction to reading Shakespeare, e.g., word order, apostrophes, and verse/prose. Plus detailed guidance specific to Comedy of Errors, e.g., stage direction, motifs & themes, and map/history. The size, font, format/page layout, print and paper quality make this book a true joy to read, along with the fantanstic line by line annotations and comments.
The plot of this play is exactly the kind of thing for which the term "madcap" was coined. More so than many of Shakespeare's plays, the humor has survived the many changes our culture has undergone since his time. It's easy to see the similarity between this plot and any number of sitcom plots ranging from the "I Love Lucy" show all the way up through "Sabrina the Teenaged Witch" and "That Seventies Show". In fact, the plot device of twins causing mistaken identity was a VERY frequent device in the old "Patty Duke Show" back in the sixties (functionally as antiquated as Shakespeare's time to most young people). In fact, the semi-modern comic style that this play MOST reminds me of is "Abbott and Costello"; I can VERY easily envision Bud and Lou as the Antipholuses and Dromios, respectively.

All of which just goes to prove that Shakespeare wasn't, at least in his comedies, writing "literature". He was writing pop culture, and in some ways, pop culture hasn't changed a bit in 400 years.
As someone who is reading Shakespeare for the second time at the age of 40 and who considers himself a careful reader, I am always surprised to find the Oxford editors bring new ways of looking at the plays. In this introduction, Whitworth does a commendable job of explaining the importance of The Comedy of Errors which is usually dismissed as light weight farce, by explaining the history of critiism of the play and it social relevance.
Presented as a Christmas entertainment for the queen, The Comedy cleverly combines plots from two Plautus plays as well as introducing plot elements of his own.
I-- a mere mortal-- have no ability to criticize Shakespeares truly immortal genious. As the best writer ever, all I can do is enjoy the work. The scholarly intro allows you to heighten the pleasure seeing thing that might not be seen at surface level.
An additional benefit of the Oxford Shakespeare is that it is annotated with just enough notes-- on the same page as the text.
If you read Shakespeare for enjoyment or for a class, Oxford is the best.
