I am always hesitant to read a time-travel romance, especially when the modern character retains their memories of the former life. This novel however was a complete and utter surprise. The time-travel was handled with great finesse, the heroine' s mannerisms were understandable and she did make an effort to fit in. What I enjoyed most was the nonchalance with which the interfering party was handled. Who was it? No one knows. Why did they do it? *shrug* It honestly doesn't matter, this is a romance and the time-travel is just a plot contrivance. Fantastic. The romance was easily second best, I loved watching the hero and heroine fall in love. So excellent. The characters were nicely fleshed out and the plot was very interesting. The Hero is lovely although the female foil was a tad two dimensional. Again I was deprived of a much deserved cat fight. Oh well, probably a good reason I have never been chosen to go back in time to Regency England. In any case, an extremely good book. Very highly recommended for all Regency Romance lovers.

Fun little read!
Haven't we all wondered what it would be like to be a beautiful young heiress betrothed to a glamorous earl during Regency England? And Amanda got to do that!

As a rule, I thoroughly dislike time-travels and I'd explode the bandwidth here explaining why. But this is a wonderful story. It's what we might have dreams of - dreams we'd be too embarrassed to admit out loud. lol Amanda thought she was dreaming too, more like a very complicated hallucination that went on and on.

This is written so well. We're right there with Amanda. Fortunately, William has some sense, realizes he loves Amanda, and accepts her in all her "futureness."

I usually like endless epilogues, but I like this story as is. I happen to know that Amanda not only taught Cook how to make fudge, but pizza and a mean cheeseburger too. The "unusual" improvements to William's estate were a sight to behold. And Amanda didn't let leeches near anyone!

See? The story does continue)

Enjoy your reading! )
I read this years ago, and it is still one of my favorite books. I particularly enjoy the "fish out of water" feel of the main character's experience in London
This is a sweet enough traditional style Regency/time travel. I enjoyed the fact that it was a sweet story with loads of details. It kind of worked but I just didn't warm to the H all that much, I found him a bit cold and his treatment of the H towards the end was harsh. Anyway it's a different story that is well written and a bargain at the price
Very entertaining book that handles the unusual theme of time travel well. The physical transition from present day to almost 200 years earlier is smooth and the difficulties the heroine faces in trying to fit into that era are well described. For example, going from an independent, professional woman to one totally dependent on, and defined by, the man of the family is quite a jolt - not to mention additional differences in dress, food, language, and mannerisms. Even if you don't buy the idea of time travel, the conflicted feelings the heroine harbors and how she deals with a hugely different environment make it worth the read.
Amanda is a woman who was injured in a car accident, leaving her with barely functional legs. She's very knowledgeable about English history and literature, which comes in quite handy when she suddenly finds herself back in 1815 London.

Not just that, but her psyche now inhabits the body of a woman named Amanda, and she has to deal with suddenly being elsewhen with no one she knows. She's in a world she knows the basic generalities of, but the small details of daily life have to be adjusted to.

Things are more complicated due to her overbearing father, a guy she wanted to elope with, people who are questioning her sanity, and a fortune hunter that wants her for her money, the fortune hunter having a love interest of his own. On top of all that, she wants to go back to her own time.

That's a lot to deal with. The story is a romance but, as in real life, romances don't always go smoothly, so there's yet another problem for her to handle.

The characters in the book are realistic, the events plausible, her way of handling things very intelligent, and the romantic parts quite good. An excellent time-travel romance book.
A Step In Time is, I think, my first time-travel Regency Romance, a genre which seemed beyond ridiculous. However, Anne Barbour's thoughtful book makes the story as grounded in reality as possible. I cared about the characters and enjoyed watching their perceptions and ideas develop over the course of the book. More than most Regencies, this book explores what makes life meaningful for a woman. There's a bit too much self-sacrificing silliness in the book, and some of the minor characters are not as fully developed as one would find in an Austen or Heyer book, but as is typical with Barbour, I find her writing enjoyable and thoughtful. She understands the historical time period very well so that the action occurs in a realistic fashion. She is careful in her use of language, but sometimes overuses the word "persuaded" -- 3-5 times per page. Overall, if you are looking for a fun twist on the Regency genre, this book more than satisfies.
