I downloaded this book an embarrassingly long time ago. I started it, got two chapters in, and then my kids "borrowed" my iPad and The Big If languished until two days ago when my lunch date stood me up and I realized I could read it on my phone.

I started over and fell into the story. The first day I was twenty minutes late getting back from lunch. Today I was proud that I was only ten minutes late. I ended up finishing it parked behind city hall knowing as soon as I got home, my kids wouldn't let me finish it until after bedtime and that was just too long.

Obviously it was good. And I'm fairly picky with my books.

I suck at giving reviews that describe a novel without spoilers but suffice to say the story was engaging, the writing beautiful without being overly flowery, the characters developed in directions I wasn't expecting, and while the ending left me googling for a sequel, I was sorry to see it end. It gave a fantastic insight to the music industry and made me wish for my own Moonlight Monday.

If you're going to take a chance on an indie book, this is the one.

The Big If Sharisse Coulter 9780988837843 Books Reviews

What made this stand out to me is that for a fun, easy read it had some realness about big relationship/life decisions that felt gut-wrenching. She writes very real characters (and deliciously real sex scenes) even if these adults are exploring teenaged ideals. But shouldn't we all? Maybe it's because they're all musicians. One of a kind in it's genre. Highly recommend!
I really enjoyed The Big If by Sharisse Coulter! The characters were so likable I still think about them and actually miss them. This book was a perfect escape for me and at times made me consider what choice I would have made given the situations the characters were in. I look forward to reading more of Sharisse's books as she writes with clarity and humor. She is a great story teller!
Loved it! Snagged this during author's 99 cent promotion and glad I did. I normally don't read these kind of books but the cover intrigued me , and the great price. I thought it was a bit slow-going at first but after the first chapter I COULD NOT PUT IT DOWN! after Penelope meets the super-famous Marc Justin (whose totally hot. Why does he like her? I don't know. I like how more books and featuring "real" women like this and everything but sometimes I find it a bit far-fetched that someone this famous would notice a normal woman like her). But everything starts to steam up and get complicated real quick. I only kept reading because I had to find out what happened and she weaves a story really well.

This author has real funny situations in the book and its fast paced and it was a real nice to escape into this glitzy world for a day or two, though I have to say I strongly disagree with some of the things the main characters were doing in this book. I say they were OVER the LINE. Marriage vows anyone? Hello? The main guy doesn't respect it at all! Ugh! It's only because all the MCs were not being very nice that I take off a star. All the adults in the book should be behaving more responsibly. Otherwise, I highly recommend!
I read Coulter's books The Big If and Rock My World back to back in 2 days. With The Big IF, I enjoyed that the book explored relationships between artists, and how those relationships can become tainted by the business of art and the blurred lines between lovers and business partners. Penelope must constantly navigate the insecurities that come with being an artist/wife/woman and is constantly retooling her sense of self and her sense of purpose in the world. The thing I most enjoy about Coulter's writing style (and I said this in my review of Rock My World, too) is that it reads like fun feel-good fiction, but every so often, she unapologetically hammers in a deeply profound, distinctly female observation that gives the work a bit more grit and impact than your average "chick lit." Looking forward to reading more of her work!
Such a wonderful book by my new favorite author!
I loved this book. The Big If never left my mind even when i tried to put it down. Sharisse Coulter writes characters with such intense reality that you feel you know every twist and turn they are going to make.

I just wish there was an album to go along with the book!
"The Big If" is Ms Coulter's second novel and shows great progression from her debut novel "Rock My World". Set again in the world of the West Coast music industry Sharisse's strong, believable, characters and a compelling storyline make this a page turing read. There are some surprising, romantic story elements that frankly made this reviewer blush, but in a very good way. All this needs is an accompanying soundtrack album so we can hear the songs that are such an important, and enjoyable, part of the narrative.
