I enjoyed this tale a lot. The writing was excellent, the characters well drawn, and the use of different times surrounding one place was well done. I can understand how some readers might have been confused by all the different voices and points of view, but these grew on me as the book went along such that when I ran into a new voice I was happy to return to that voice. I liked the way the author wove real history into a tale of fiction. I also especially liked the thread of magic, and time travel, if I can call it that, he used. As someone who has spent nearly half a lifetime hiking throughout the Olympics and studying its history, it felt like coming home.....

Enjoyed the story, even a smattering of Bigfoot ,Characters very believably human, plenty of dramatic tension, all around good read
I ended up really enjoying this book. The plot is connected by a Dam built in Northwest US in the late 1800's. The story skips back and forth 110 or so years to the same town and some of the descendants of the original settlement. It is confusing to follow at first, but the characters are well defined after a while, especially in the more modern era. The terrain, the people, the problems they face, are very different, but they come across as somehow connected by place. The dialogue rang true and the hardships and personalities jumped off the page by the time the book ended. I liked the book very much.

Readers of "historical fiction" may be disappointed by this novel, which sounds on the surface like the stuff of historical fiction. But really, West of Here is a novel about history, and the tangled web of connections and individuals stretching across time and place that comprise what we call "history." In this case, the place is Port Bonita, a fictionalized but recognizable (at least to Washingtonians) Port Angeles. Evison's is not a novel of incident, but a novel of place, and a novel of connections. It is a novel about a past that is not necessarily static, depending on perspective, and a future which is still unfolding. Thus, readers who want a story that's all wrapped up with a bow at the end, may very well be displeased with the lack of clean resolution West of Here offers. But that's the point! West of Here is as much a novel about the unknown future, as it is about the past. I highly recommend this novel to readers who like vivid, sympathetic characters, and non-traditional approaches to story. Evison writes with a humor and pathos that will remind readers of Charles Dickens and the early to mid works of John Irving. But unlike Irving, whose books tend to run too long, if anything, Evison's book could have been a hundred pages longer, and I would have gladly read those hundred pages.
I wanted to like this book more than I actually did. The beginning and ending are solid, it's just the middle that sags and I almost gave up on it. Evison is a most talented writer but this saga just has too many strands, too many characters, too many time periods for him to master.
I had not heard of this until read Evison's other major book, The Revised Fundamentals of Caregiving, which I loved. This is a very, very different book, but also the work of a highly skilled writer who peppers his work with human insight, caring, and a terrific sense of humor. Evison is a great storyteller, and it is easy to become completely absorbed in his books--which need to be read when you have a block of time available because they are hard to set down.
Just finished attending a book group that reviewed "West of Here" Some members, primarily women 60yrs. & older, were daunted by the size, pg. wise of the book. The story proposed an interesting parallel between small town life in Port Bonita in the Pacific Northwest,fictional, during the late 1800's vs. the early 21st century. The tale vacillates back & forth between these time zones often, causing some effort on the reader's part to keep abreast of what the time element is for each segment. The characters are a microcosm of the population of the town, or any town for that matter, at any given time. Some are easy to identify with & others not so much. The sheer number of characters, around 40 or so is also a cause for concern for some readers. The author strikes a nice balance between narrative & dialogue. There are some cases of issues not resolved but perhaps these don't particularly detract much from the overall approach. The story itself is not compelling but more comfortably interesting with a few dashes of some humor along the way. I would recommend it to anyone looking for an unusual approach to area specific tales with a good dose of readability.
