I've had this book on my to read list ever since I came across it last year. I made myself wait until A Want So Wicked was out because I was hoping hard I'd love it and the wait between books would be too much. A Need So Beautiful was a good book, but it didn't quite live up to my expectations, unfortunately.

Don't get me wrong, it's a good book. Definitely. But the balance was a little off and that kept me from completely enjoying it. Nothing makes me happier than when the action side of the plot and the romance side of the plot balance each other out and make each other stronger. In A Need So Beautiful the angel aspect of the story isn't explored as much as I'd have liked while the romance was given just a little too much attention.

While the love between Charlotte and Harlin was sweet and it provided some of the most touching moments of the novel, it also overshadowed the angel part of the story. What I did read about Charlotte being a Forgotten was done wonderfully and beautifully. I would have gladly read an entire novel about that, even without a love interest. Sadly, Young tended to put a lot of unnecessary focus on Charlotte and Harlin's relationship instead of on Charlotte's purpose.

In the end, A Need So Beautiful is a book that had amazing potential, but fell a little short. It's still a good read, and if you like the angel genre, it's a good read, but it just didn't quite live up to expectations.

We all want to help people in one way or another. We want to help a little old lady cross the road, donate to charities, save abandoned dogs, and Adopt families during the holidays. But how far would we go to give to someone or help them in a time of need? In Suzanne Young's A Need So Beautiful, Charlotte must ask herself that question on a whole new level.

Charlotte has always experienced the Need. When she feels the Need, she has to follow it to whomever is in need of the knowledge she has, whether it be to warn a pregnant woman that something is wrong with her baby or to guide a criminal to the right path. In the past, the Need only came once in a while, but the crippling need to answer the Need is becoming more and more frequent. So frequent in fact that her adoptive mother, best friend, and boyfriend are starting to notice that it isn't just asthma (which she uses to explain the loss of breath when she feels the Need). She just can't hide her secret anymore

But something else is wrong. Charlotte is starting to get scared and seeks out the help of her family doctor, the man who runs the local free clinic. She shows him that something strange is happening to her skin, almost like it is peeling away, but she isn't ready for the answer he has for her. Trapped in an impossible decision with catastrophic consequences on either end, Charlotte comes to a crossroads that will ruin her. The question is, will she help herself or help others?

This story was a strange and unique angle on the whole angel genre that has flooded YA novels in the past few years. I had never thought of this type of angel and was really interested in the impossible decision Charlotte had to make. The worst part about it is that she is a good person who just wants a little happiness for herself after being abandoned at the age of 6. Luckily, she was adopted by a wonderful woman and had a supportive best friend and loving boyfriend. Her life wasn't perfect, but it wasn't bad, either. But this choice... this choice is horrible to ask of anyone, but particularly horrible to ask of Charlotte. If you ever needed to see a main character pushed to the brink, this is the book for you.

On a whole, though, there were times this book was a little slow for me. The unraveling of the true nature of the Need was paced well, but I still found myself wanting it to just move along. But overall, it wasn't a bad book and I intend to check out A Want So Wicked when it comes out. This is a good book for a middle school through emergent older reader as it is interesting, but has fairly simple language. It isn't a book I would throw at everyone who came by, but it was a fun and decent read. You will enjoy it!
When I first picked up this book and started reading, I was a little unsure. I had seen a few reviews around Goodreads and Lisa @ Read Me Bookmark Me Love Me had told me how wonderful it was; even so, I went into this book with a little trepidation - and Suzanne Young proved my fears unfounded with the first few chapters! I was immediately swept into the story, and into the life of the main character, Charlotte.

Charlotte is, on the surface, a normal teenage she goes to school. She hangs out with her best friend. She loves her boyfriend. But she also has the Need, a term she uses to describe the compulsions to help others, compulsions that wash over her randomly, leading her to complete strangers. If she ignores the Need, the symptoms - and the results - are not good. So Charlotte juggles her everyday life with her confusion over the Need, and the complications it creates. Charlotte is torn in two, and I really felt for her, and her struggle. She wants more time with Harlin, her boyfriend, but she has this other task to perform, and as the book continues, and she begins to understand more about the Need, and her destiny, my sympathy for Charlotte increased twofold.

I really came to love the premise of this book. It's definitely unique, and Suzanne Young did a really admirable job with the pacing of the book. I definitely did not get bored with the story that was unfolding. However, my heart absolutely broke for Charlotte, as she started to comprehend what being a Forgotten means she will, in time, only exist to her Seer. Everyone she loves will eventually forget her, even those she has helped, whose lives she has changed. And her choice embrace or deny that destiny, really gutted me.

I'm also anxious to see the sequel, because well, I loved several of the characters, including Monroe, Charlotte's doctor and friend, Alex, her adopted brother, Sarah, her best friend, and Harlin. Oh, Harlin. What can I say except WOW. I loved loved loved his devotion to Charlotte, and their relationship, to me, was really unique and heartfelt. I loved the extra special connection given to them in the latter part of the book. And I enjoyed the fact that these characters were well-developed, and not stereotypical.

I definitely need A Want So Wicked! This book was heart-pounding - literally - and so emotional at the end, that it brought me to tears. I finished it late one night and woke up thinking about it, and it has lingered with me. I think I wanted it to be a little longer, and to be a little more in depth on some of the history of the Forgotten and the Seers, etc, but overall, definitely a read to move up on your TBR list!
