Thoroughly enjoyed this delightful historical fiction. Although it is written for a younger audience, I found the details about life in the Shetland Islands in the mid-19th century riveting. I have ancestors from northern Scotland and it made me want to visit all the more. I would love to hear more from this character as he adjusts to life in NYC. Based on his age, he could be involved in the riots that hit New York during the Civil War. And what about his family back in the Shetland Islands. Plus, I loved the addendum. When a historical fiction includes the facts versus fiction and a sources, I always feel like what I learned is all the more accurate. A great first book by Emilie Burack.

A wonderful adventure, full of twists and turns and characters who walk the line between good guy and bad guy. An exciting read from start to finish, in the grand tradition of Robert Louis Stevenson.
The Runaway's Gold is an exciting, chilling, suspenseful book with plot twists and turns, grizzly characters and terrific character descriptions. It's written such that you feel you're being told the story by a Scott - fun language and expressions. A good read, particularly for boys between 9-14.
Not many stories with this setting for the YA market. It's a great story and the art & illustrations are awesome.
“The Runaway’s Gold” is a captivating and thrilling novel by Emilie Christie Burack. The setting primarily takes place on the Shetland Islands in 1842. Thirteen-year-old Christopher Robertson, the main character, lives in a croft house on a tenant farm. His family is struggling to make a living and pay off their debts. Christopher is determined to save his family and his reputation ever since he was framed for stealing his father’s pouch of coins. He sets off on an unforgettable adventure to retrieve the coins and clear his name. His journey leads him to some unexpected places, such as a prison, where he meets an unlikely friend, a rope weaver who was framed for murder. After escaping the prison, Christopher and his new friend go to New York to find a treasure that was hidden 60 years earlier. If they can find the treasure, Christopher hopes he can save his family. This book is full of mystery and suspense. You never know what may be coming next.
This book is interesting because the author uses Scottish dialect throughout the story which at times can make the book hard to follow. Fortunately there is a glossary at the end which is very helpful. I recommend this book for readers of all ages who want to embark on an epic and unforgettable journey. Will you join the adventure to save Christopher’s family and reputation?

It's a great story! The book has taken Sweden with storm.
Loved the story and the history! Getting to know Christopher Robertson and all the other characters was a treat. Their lives are so different from our 21st century world. I was on pins and needles wondering what would happen to Christopher next. Also, the historical facts about my home city, New York, taught me much and I am looking forward to visiting the Shetland Islands one day. The story came to life and was a page turner. I enjoyed every minute. I am only concerned that I have to wait for the sequel to find out what happens next!
