Ever since I saw Michael Caine in "THE MAN WHO WOULD BE KING" and "THE EAGLE HAS LANDED" back in the 1970s, he has been one of my favorite actors. Now that I have finished this delightful and wonderful memoir (one of the best that I've ever read), I like him even more as a human being.Born into poverty in London in 1933, Caine had a childhood ambition to be an actor. Up until he was almost 30, he struggled, largely unrecognized, to develop his talent. With the success of "ZULU", Caine became a star and further solidified his career in movies such as "THE IPCRESS FILE", "THE ITALIAN JOB", "GET CARTER", and "SLEUTH" (starring with Sir Lawrence Olivier).
Caine is a very engaging storyteller and this book is replete with his varied experiences of working on various movie sets around the world, making friendships with some of the most remarkable people in his profession (as well as the arts, royalty, and politics), and his love and devotion to his family and friends great and small.
I'll sum up my review of "What's It All About" with 2 observations made by Mr. Caine himself in it -
"I was once asked the difference for me between theatre, film and television. They were like three women, I said. The theatre was a woman whom I loved but who didn't love me back and treated me like s--t. The cinema was a woman whom I loved who loved me back so deeply she didn't care when I treated her like s--t. And television was a one-night stand."
"So what was it all about? In my case it was about ambition and anger and despair and determination, the everyday driving force of the poor who wish to find a ladder out of the well of hopelessness. It was also about my companions on my journey through show business. We are not, of course, without our faults. For the most part we are spoiled if we are successful, and bitter if we are not. We can be conceited and arrogant, and we are all, without exception, insecure. Finally, we are all slightly mad, or we would not be in this business in the first place, and only cling on to some sanity by a thin thread of incurable optimism."

What It All About Michael Caine 9780345386809 Books Reviews
This has to be THE most entertaining book by an actor I have ever read. Very well written, very funny and Michael introduces you to one big star after another.
Mr. Caine is as charming a writer as he is a talented actor. One can`t simply put this book down, and if it has one flaw, it`s that it only takes as as far as 1992, so an addendum would be welcome.
It`s interesting, insightful, but specially funny all along, as it tells a rags to riches story that would deserve to have it`s own movie made.
It should come as no surprise Mr. Caine has had amazing adventures to share, occurring in fantastic places involving some of the most famous people in recent history. What might surprise you is his considerable gift as a story-teller. I was hooked and laughing from the first page. I haven't read this much in so short a time since I was in junior high school.
Michael Caine is a good writer as well as an actor. His accounts of his early life and the start of his career in London and Hollywood of the swinging 60's is engaging, amusing and historically fascinating. Lots of anecdotes about the early years of the now-famous British stars who were his friends in the early days, as well as interesting accounts of life in Hollywood. He comes across as a likeable, "normal" down to earth guy you'd like to have a drink with; thus you trust his opinions and accounts of "how things were". Highly recommended - lots more entertaining than his biography which is really a tamed down version of his autobiographies of which here are at least two - this one and a recent one, "The Elephant to Hollywood" (the "Elephant" which refers to a section of London where he was raised) - both well worth reading.
Being British myself and also someone who works in HOLLYWOOD'S Movie & TV industry, I have to say that this is one of the best autobiographies of someone in the same business I've ever read. Michael Caine lays out his rags to riches life with complete candor and in a very engaging narrative style.
His total honesty and recall, specially of his rise to fame in the 1960's, makes the reader really feel part of the scene. Caine's book is most revealing in the behind the scenes goings on in the making of his movies. I'll not spoil it for you by going into detail, but our cockney actor friend certainly got around to meeting just about all of the "in" people of the day and many before they were household names to the rest of us. He mentions the good, bad and the ugly and doesn't spare himself when looking back on the mistakes he has made.
For aspiring young actors, there are lessons to be learned here. Caine has a separate book for that, but still he offers up some informed pieces of guidance in this work. As an Englishman, he's probably the most famous and iconic actor to ever come of old blighty and blimey if ee' don't alf make it one ell' of a read!
Picked up this book after becoming a fan of Mr. Caine in both his work and the way he presents himself in interviews. I figured he would have a pretty fascinating and insightful autobiography. And boy was I spot on.
Mr. Caine has endured quite some obstacles in his life. His story of living through and fighting in war is amazing in itself. What struck me the most was how hard Mr. Caine worked on the stage before ever landing his first film role. This was a man who came from nowhere to become one of England's biggest stars. And he did it all from a very bare bones early life that featured a lot of hard work and little luck.
This book was especially fascinating and inspiring to me as an actor. It makes my struggles seem a lot less enduring when you read what another man had to go through in my similar situation. This book is a great read for both the aspiring actor and Michael Caine fan. His tone throughout the book is one of extreme ease, fun, and wit. I obviously don't know the man in real life, but his intelligence and sense of humor shine through in his words.
